In these series of images called “The Aztec Artifacts”1930s-40s, photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo captures ancient Mexica (Aztec) features, objects and gods, including Coatlicue, the earth goddess, and Quetzalcoatl, thought to bring the wind and rain. These figures would have most likely adorned ritualistic altars. Yet, when taken from the original contexts and isolated on a white background, Bravo transforms these icons. Seen in this way, they become images that speak to a rich social history
