New growth is coming in on the bottom and the buds that formed last year are the flowers for this year. It's mid-June and I'm still encountering hydrangeas that need pruning and plenty of questions about these confusing plants! If you have a macrophylla/"Big Leaf" hydrangea and you haven't pruned them down, do it now. Sorry, but nothing is going to grow on those old stalks at this point. They are almost certainly dead so trim above any new growth that is there or all the way down to the bottom. And remove the loose dead stuff that's there, to make room for the new growth that should be coming in.
