Our guides and guests at Mara Plains were recently treated to an extra special sighting: a lioness moving her newborn cub. Lions are born blind and spend the first few weeks of their lives concealed in dens where they are less vulnerable to prowling predators. The natural world can be both beautiful and brutal, and we're lucky enough to have front-row seats to all the drama. When both the alpha male and female of the Duba painted dog pack succumbed to attacks from lions it seemed as though the fate of their pups was sealed. Unable to fend for themselves and without the protection of their parents, we were doubtful that the youngsters would survive.
