I do not amend my soil in the planting hole when I plant new plants. I amend the whole bed and I have a denser planting strategy with my plants so that I don’t have a lot of open mulch areas in between my plants when they’re full size. Until the plants are established in about three years, I will need to use an organic material as a mulch to keep the weeds down and keep soil moisture from evaporating. I use shredded hardwood, mulch or compost, and sometimes I mix compost in the fall 3 inches dee
