Herbie Hancock leaves out the “butter” notes Herbie was in a rut and Miles Davis told him not to play the butter notes. Herbie took that to mean the “fat” notes or the obvious notes. He demonstrates leaving out the 3rd and 7th to create new possibilities. This could be accomplished with a pentatonic scale with the intervals of 1 2 4 5 6.
