Archie McPhee is a Seattle-based novelty dealer owned by Mark Pahlow. Begun in the 1970s in Los Angeles as the mail-order business Accoutrements , in 1983 it opened a retail outlet dubbed "Archie McPhee" after Pahlow's wife's great-uncle.

Later in 1985, Archie McPhee had started distributing the Obie design instead as The Popping Martian Doll, marketed as a stress toy and manufactured by a company named Aliko in Taiwan. [13][14] By 1988 the name was changed to the Martian Popping Thing, and by 1991 was redesigned so that the mouth was a nose and the toy resembled a clown. [15] .

In 1983 he set up shop with two employees in Seattle’s Fremont district using the name “Archie McPhee.” For a while, his retail sales were under the name Archie McPhee and he made his products under the name Accoutrements before finally settling on Archie McPhee Wholesale.
