Lions inhabit a wide range of habitats, from open plains to thick brush and dry thorn forest. Except for a small population of the Indian lion subspecies that remains in the Gir Forest of northwest India, lions now live only in Africa, from the Sahara's southern fringe to northern South Africa.

Lions are good climbers and often rest in trees, perhaps to catch a cool breeze or to get away from flies. Lions sometimes lie around in crazy poses, such as on their backs with their feet in the air, or legs spread wide apart! Lions are famous for their sonorous roar.

Lions are famous for their sonorous roar but have other forms of communication as well, mostly used to mark territory. They spread their scent by rubbing their muzzle on tufts of grass or shrubs, and they rake the earth with their hind paws, as the paws have scent glands, too.

At the Zoo, the lions are fed a diet of fortified horsemeat, chicken and rabbits. In the wild, lions are very social animals. The lion is the only big cat that lives in a group, or pride, which may number from 5 to 35 members. Female lions do most of the hunting, while the primary role of the males is breeding and protection of the pride.

African Lion. Lions are the only truly social cat species, living in groups called prides. Males have manes, but females rule the family. They live in the African savannah, woodlands, and desert.
