Zadracarta (τὰ Ζαδρακάρτα) is a name recorded by Greek historians referring to the largest city of Hyrcania during Achaemenid period. The city was a fortified royal residence. [1] The precise location of Zadracarta is uncertain. Some identify it with city of Sari. [1] .

According to the Greek historian Arrian, Zadracarta was the largest city of Hyrcania and the site of the "royal palace". [9] The term means "the yellow city", and it was given to it from the great number of oranges, lemons, and other fruit trees which grew in the outskirts of that city.

the city's name was also Zadracarta in 658 B.C to 225 A.D. Coming from this and other similar evidence in the Shahnameh, native people of Sari have a folklore that the city was populated when the blacksmith Kaveh (a native of the city) revolted against the tyranny of Zahak.

The capital and also the largest city and site of the “royal palace” of Hyrcania was Zadracarta. From the Behistun inscription we know that it was Persian by 522. The story is as follows: After the death of Cambyses, the Magian usurper Gaumâta, who did not belong to the Achaemenian dynasty, usurped the throne.

The Greek historian Arrian, recording Alexander’s expedition to the East, speaks of Alexander’s march to the city of Zadracarta, the largest town in the region and the capital of Hyrcania, where the royal palace was situated.

Its chief city appears to have borne at different times various appellations; but it is most probable that the TAPE of Strabo (xi. p.508), the Zadracarta of Arrian (3.23, 25), and the CARTA of Strabo (l.c.) were, as the chief residence of the rulers of the land, one and the same place.
