"The hour is at hand, the monster is dying" as recited by William Knibb on 31 July 1838 at his Falmouth church, Jamaica moments before midnight, the time set for the final abolition of slavery. Once the church bell had struck, he shouted "The monster is dead; the Negro is free!".

The words of William Knibb, an English Baptist Minister who began his life in Northamptonshire but would make his mark in Jamaica as an individual who thought the abhorrent practices of slavery must come to an end. Born in Kettering in 1803 to a large family of eight children, William Knibb began his career as an apprentice to a printer in Bristol.

William Knibb was the son of Thomas and Mary Knibb, of Kettering Northamtonshire. His father was a tradesman in that town, and not a professor of religion. His mother, whose maiden name was Dexter, was a member of the independent church in Kettering. Knibb was the fifth of eight children, and a twin whose other half was a sister.
