German submarine Wilhelm Bauer (originally designated U-2540) is a Type XXI U-boat of Nazi Germany's navy (Kriegsmarine), completed shortly before the end of World War II. It was scuttled at the end of the war, having never gone on patrol.

Type XXI submarines were a class of German diesel–electric Elektroboot (German: "electric boat") submarines designed during the Second World War. One hundred and eighteen were completed, with four being combat-ready. During the war only two were put into active service and went on patrols, but these were not used in combat.

U-2540 was an advanced submarine which entered service on 24th February 1945. Less than 3 months later, on 4th May, she was scuttled by her own crew. In 1957, she was raised and returned to service on 1st September 1960 as the research submarine Wilhelm Bauer.

2023年11月1日 · The Wilhelm Bauer, now bearing the name U-2540 again, was opened to the public as a museum ship on April 27, 1984, in Bremerhaven. It is currently sponsored by the Wilhelm Bauer Technology Museum Association and is the last Type XXI U-boat afloat and the last unmodified U-boat accessible to the public.
