Turpan (Uyghur: تۇرپان) or Turfan (Chinese: 吐鲁番) is a prefecture-level city located in the east of the autonomous region of Xinjiang, China. It has an area of 69,759 km 2 (26,934 sq mi) and a population of 693,988 (2020).

Turfan is a city in north-central Uyghur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang, northwestern China. It lies about 112 miles (180 km) southeast of the city of Ürümqi and was an important trade center on the Silk Road.

The Turpan water system, also called the Turfan kārēz system, is used for water supply via a vertical tunnel in the Turpan Depression of Xinjiang, China. "Karez" (lit. ' well ') is a word in the local Uyghur language that is derived from the word in the Persian language for the system from which it is derived: the 3000-year-old qanāt. [1]

The Turpan Depression or Turfan Depression, is a fault-bounded trough located around and south of the city-oasis of Turpan, in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region in far Western China, about 150 kilometres (93 mi) southeast of the regional capital Ürümqi.
