Thagaste (or Tagaste) was a Roman-Berber city in present-day Algeria, now called Souk Ahras. [2] [3] The town was the birthplace of Saint Augustine. [4] [5]

The ancient Roman town of Tagaste, corresponding to the city of Souk Ahras in Algeria, was the seat of an ancient episcopal diocese during the Roman and Vandal empires in what was the Roman province of Numidia. Tagaste is famous for being the birthplace of Augustine, who was a bishop in nearby Hippo (now Annaba), and his mother, Monica.

Cytisus proliferus, tagasaste or tree lucerne, is a small spreading evergreen tree that grows 3–4 m (10–13 ft) high.It is a well known fertilizer tree.It is a member of the Fabaceae (pea) family [3] and is indigenous to the dry volcanic slopes of the Canary Islands, [4] but it is now grown in Australia, New Zealand and many other parts of the world as a fodder crop.

In Tagaste, Augustine, Adeodatus, and several of their companions prayed, worked, and lived together in fellowship. They shared their insights about Scripture and the Christian vocation and learned from one another. After three years, Augustine was called to become a priest while on a visit to the city of Hippo, about 50 miles from Tagaste.

Thagaste, (TAGASTE), a titular see in Numidia, but nothing is known of its history. It is famous as having been the birthplace of St. Augustine.
