The M37 105 mm howitzer motor carriage (named T76 105 mm HMC during development starting in 8 July 1943 [2]) was developed by the US on an extended M24 Chaffee base, and was intended to be the successor to the 105 mm M7 Priest. It used the same 105 mm Howitzer M4 as the ones mounted on some M4 Sherman medium tanks.

The 76 mm gun was replaced with a 105 mm M4 howitzer used on Sherman tanks. The HMC T88 was the peak of evolution in the light direct fire SPG line. The result was a rather good design, but with the same problems that plagued the M8. The ammunition capacity was 40 rounds, more than 1.5 times less than carried by the Medium Tank M4 (105).

2024年7月27日 · During July 1943, work on the procurement of a pilot vehicle for a 105 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage based on the T24 light tank, the pilot vehicle for the M24, started, designated T76 105mm Howitzer Motor Carriage (T76 105 mm HMC). The T24 was likely chosen as it was bigger than the earlier M3 and M5 Stuart light tanks.

On June 10th 1943, OCM 20679 recommended the development and procurement of a pilot vehicles and assigned the designation 105mm howitzer motor carriage T76. This action was approved on July 8th. A wooden mockup was constructed and it was reviewed in August by artillery officers from the armored board.

The M37 HMC self defense was assured by a 0.50 Browning M2HB heavy machine gun fitted to a ring mount T107 on top of the left pulpit, with unlimited traverse arc for anti-aircraft defence, and with the right ammunition (AP) anti-armor.
