Protea (/ ˈproʊtiːə / [2]) is a genus of South African flowering plants, also called sugarbushes (Afrikaans: suikerbos). It is the type genus of the Proteaceae family. [3] About 92% of the species occur only in the Cape Floristic Region, a narrow belt of mountainous coastal land from Clanwilliam to Grahamstown, South Africa.

It is one of Gauteng 's most frequented ecotourism locations, located approximately 50 kilometres south-east of Johannesburg, just west of the town of Heidelberg in the upper catchment of the Klip and Suikerbosrand rivers. The altitude varies between 1,545 and 1,917 m (5,069 and 6,289 ft) above sea level.

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is the shining diamond in Johannesburg’s outdoor crown. Located off the R550, this gem of a reserve – with its kloofs, koppies, ridges and open plains, takes its name from the Sugar Bush (suikerbos) protea, a shrub that grows abundantly in this area.

A CAMPSITE well grassed with neat and clean ablutions and braai facilities. At night there is lighting and 15 amp power points at 25 different stands spread over an area of 3 hectares. There is also a swimming pool, children's playground and a volleyball court.
