The earliest name that possibly refers to any skutterudite-like material, cobaltum eineraceum, was introduced by Georgius Agricola in 1529. Wallerius used several names for a smaltite-like mineral (kobaltglants, kobaltmalm, minera cobalti cinerea, cobaltum arsenico mineralisatum).
