The SD70M-2's have six DC traction motors so their performance is not as robust as that of a unit outfitted with six AC traction motors. In 2014, about midway in James Hertwig's 7.5 years as president, FEC made a long-term business investment by acquiring twenty-four GE ES44C4 units. These units have AC traction but only four traction motors.

Between the SD70ACe and the SD70M-2, the only difference I know of is in the electrical cabinet behind the cab on the conductor's side. An ACe has two large panel covers with grilles in them, whereas an M-2 has three panel covers with no grilles, just oval hand holes. At least that holds true for the prototypes, I can't speak for production units.

The 4 lowest numbered FEC SD70M-2 locomotives lack the Iso cab, while the 4 newer locomotives, in the R/W/B paint have the Iso cabs. FEC traincrew report the newer quartet are much more comforable to operate with the lower cab noise levels.
