Worth it, but in answer to your question, yes. You can beat the game w/o a sage. I’ve beaten the NES and GBC versions with just the Hero, Soldier, Priest and Mage before just fine. They keep half of their stats when changing, so they'll still be pretty usable, and the sage learns the spells of both mages and clerics, definitely worth it, I think.
