RS-232 is not a "device" but a specification for a physical interface. And FTDI like chips don't provide virtual UART, they really provide an actual physical UART through USB interface. If you put a MCU and use CDC over USB, then it is a virtual port because there is no UART anywhere. So right side picture has CDC, no UART. \$\endgroup\$ –

However I am able to establish serial communication using a USB to RS-232 cable instead of using a COM Port on the PC using the same win form application. Does win form applications using serial port class not work on win 10 for RS232 communication?

2014年10月28日 · I am currently using the DTR lead for two designs. Like all RS232 leads, the voltage varies from a minus voltage (unasserted) to a positive voltage (asserted). The voltage range is anywhere from ±3v to ±12v. Frankly, I have never seen a voltage amplitude lower than ±5, and that was from a PC COMM port.

There is NO RJ11 serial data standard. See examples below. Advising whatyou want to connect to and why may make this task FAR easier. Example at end of RJ11 serial data pinouts. Brief comment below on finding unknown pinouts.

Note that many embedded controllers like data rates which are sub-multiples of their own clock speeds, and some USB-to-serial chips can support any integer submultiple of 3,000,000bps, so speeds like 1,000,000bps or 1,500,000bps will probably become more common for devices to connect to PCs via USB chips.
