The Ridgback is a heavily modified version of the US' Force Protection Cougar 4x4 MRAP and followed the Tempest Mine Protected Vehicle, an earlier vehicle also based on the Cougar 4x4. The base PPV is built by Force Protection Inc. and then sent to NP Aerospace for modification to British specifications.

Designed by Force Protection Europe and the automotive engineering company Ricardo, the Ocelot is intended for use as a light protected patrol vehicle (LPPV) with specialised protection against roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). It can weigh up to 7,500 kilograms (16,500 lb) when loaded.

2009年3月16日 · The Ridgback is nearly two metres shorter and almost a metre slimmer than the Mastiff, allowing troops greater access and mobility within built-up environments. Ridgeback maintains the same protection level of Mastiff 2, regarding mines and IED but due to its smaller dimensions, it is nine tonnes lighter.
