Overall, the 2007 and 2010 tests show that the red treatment is effective at reducing unauthorized bus lane usage, including illegal parking and illegal driving in the bus lane. The experiment on First Avenue in 2010 showed that the addition of the red treatment to a curb bus lane reduced illegal standing and parking in the lane by over one third.

AC-based micro surfaces are a promising red bus lane treatment for new and existing AC surfaces and should be evaluated further. Aggressive pre-treatment, including shot blasting and power washing, appears to improve the performance of epoxy street paints on existing asphalt roadways and should be evaluated further.

Dedicated bus lanes are typically applied on major routes with frequent headways (10 minutes at peak) or where traffic congestion may significantly affect reliability. As on-time performance degrades, consider more aggressive treatments to speed transit service.
