There probably would have been no life without rain, and that’s why we celebrate Rain Day on July 29. Various people and cultures have celebrated rain and its life-giving power through prayers, arts and music, folklore, and more.

For many years, the only observances of Rain Day were a brief ceremony on the Courthouse steps, the annual hat bet between Byron Daily’s son, John, and a national or regional celebrity. Today, newspapers, TV and radio stations from around the world contact Waynesburg every July 29th to learn if it has indeed rained.

Rain Day is a holiday that we were able to trace all the way back to the 19th century. It officially began when a Pennsylvania farmer named William Allison told a group of people that he felt it would rain on July 29th, 1874.

2022年7月14日 · All life is dependent on rain, and rain is what keeps our world green and fresh and beautiful. Rain is no less important today than it has been in the past, and now people around the world have Rain Day, a day to celebrate all things wet and wonderful.

Rain Day is now a globally recognized event, as rain lovers from the world and across recognize the significance of rainfall and celebrate its essential role rain plays in sustaining life on the planet.

Rain day started in the early 1800’s, and the Special Events Commission has brought continuity of this annual festival to the heart of downtown Waynesburg with live entertainment all day long on two stages, arts, crafts, great food, children’s activities, FIREWORKS and MORE!

In 1979, an annual street festival that continues to this day was born. More information on the festival can be found here. John Daly was the Rain Day Prophet, who kept the tradition alive that was started by his father Byron, when he bet a hat that it would rain on Rain Day.

How to Observe Rain Day. The best way to observe Rain Day is to travel to Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, and attend the official Rain Day event. Take part in a contest, enjoy some live entertainment, watch the naming of Miss Rain Day, and see who this year's hat bet is with.
