There probably would have been no life without rain, and that’s why we celebrate Rain Day on July 29. Various people and cultures have celebrated rain and its life-giving power through prayers, arts and music, folklore, and more.
History – Rain Day
For many years, the only observances of Rain Day were a brief ceremony on the Courthouse steps, the annual hat bet between Byron Daily’s son, John, and a national or regional celebrity. Today, newspapers, TV and radio stations from around the world contact Waynesburg every July 29th to learn if it has indeed rained.

Rain Day is a holiday that we were able to trace all the way back to the 19th century. It officially began when a Pennsylvania farmer named William Allison told a group of people that he felt it would rain on July 29th, 1874.

In 1979, an annual street festival that continues to this day was born. More information on the festival can be found here. John Daly was the Rain Day Prophet, who kept the tradition alive that was started by his father Byron, when he bet a hat that it would rain on Rain Day.
