Quark - Wikipedia
A quark (/ k w ɔːr k, k w ɑːr k /) is a type of elementary particle and a fundamental constituent of matter. Quarks combine to form composite particles called hadrons, the most stable of which are protons and neutrons, the components of atomic nuclei. [1] All commonly observable matter is composed of up quarks, down quarks and electrons.

All quarks are spin-half fermions (s = 1 / 2), have a fractional charge (1 / 3 or 2 / 3e), and have baryon number B = 1 / 3. Each quark has an antiquark with the same mass but opposite charge and baryon number. The names and properties of the six quarks are listed in Table.

What internal structure makes a proton so different from an electron? The proton, like all hadrons, is made up of quarks. A few examples of hadron quark composition can be seen in Figure 23.14. As shown, each hadron is constructed of multiple quarks.

2023年2月17日 · Quarks are a fundamental building block (size ~10 −18 m) of matter found in an atom. The other one is leptons. They give an account of all mesons and baryons. The most familiar baryons are the protons and neutrons, which consist of quarks. Quarks are not made of anything. They join to form composite particles called hadrons.
DOE Explains...Quarks and Gluons | Department of Energy
Quarks and gluons are the building blocks of protons and neutrons, which in turn are the building blocks of atomic nuclei. Scientists’ current understanding is that quarks and gluons are indivisible—they cannot be broken down into smaller components. They are the only fundamental particles to have something called color-charge.

2025年2月14日 · Only two types of quark are necessary to build protons and neutrons, the constituents of atomic nuclei. These are the up quark, with a charge of + 2/ 3e, and the down quark, which has a charge of − 1/ 3e. The proton consists of two up quarks and one down quark, which gives it a total charge of + e.

2021年5月25日 · Table 10.1 shows quark and anti-quark combinations and corresponding mesons and their masses. Since the quark spin is 1/2, the spin of low mass (\ (l=0\)) mesons are either \ (S=0\) or \ (S=1\). As Table 10.1 shows, the masses of the mesons are very much different for different spin although the quark contents are the same.
