As its name suggests, the quagi combines the best features of the cubical quad and the linear Yagi-Uda beam antenna. This article describes an eight element quagi design with quad type driven element1 and reflector plus six Yagi type parasitic directors.

The Quagi antenna was designed in this fashion in 1972. In the original Quagi development at 222 MHz, Will and I first started working with cubical quad-style loop elements until we were satisfied that we had loops that were performing as they should. Then we added elements, first using loops and then rod directors.

Use #12 wire to form the quad elements. Cut the wire to the correct lenghts (see chart below). The quad elements are supported at the top and bottom of the element with a Plexiglas strip with a hole centered at both ends. The bottom of the quad being the feedpoint.

This Quagi is optimized for 432.2Mhz operation, however it works well in a quite wide range of frequency. All following data are obtained through 4NEC2D v. 5.3.2 by Arie.

The “quagi” antenna was designed by Wayne Overbeck, N6NB, amd is a high-gain antenna combining the high-impedance (and easy matching) characteristics of the quad antenna array and the high gain and ease-of-construction of the classic Yagi-Uda parasitic “beam” array.

A Quagi antenna is merely one of the most interesting amateur antenna designs to come down the pike in recent years. It’s easy and noncritical construction, cheap as well as simple matching of the feed line to the driven element, makes Quagi antenna an attractive alternative to both Quad and Yagi-Uda arrays.

The W5UN Quagi 97 is a computer optimized quagi derived from the original W5UN Quagi of the early 1980s. The length of the 1997 model has been deliberately shortened to allow it fit on a 24 foot boom. Performance is substantially higher than that of the original antenna.
