Pope Pius V, OP (Italian: Pio V; 17 January 1504 – 1 May 1572), born Antonio Ghislieri (from 1518 called Michele Ghislieri), was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 7 January 1566 to his death, in May 1572.

Saint Pius V ; canonized May 22, 1712; feast day April 30) was an Italian ascetic, reformer, and relentless persecutor of heretics, whose papacy (1566–72) marked one of the most austere periods in Roman Catholic church history.

On the death of Pius IV, he was, despite his tears and entreaties, elected pope, to the great joy of the whole Church. He began his pontificate by giving large alms to the poor , instead of distributing his bounty at haphazard like his predecessors.
