Pinotage / ˈpɪnətɑːʒ / PIN-ə-tahzh[1] is a red wine grape that is South Africa's signature variety. It was cultivated there in 1925 as a cross between Pinot noir and Cinsaut (Cinsaut was known as "Hermitage" in South Africa at that time, hence the name).

Originating from South Africa, Pinotage offers a spectrum of charm, from lively and accessible to mature and substantial. More than just a fusion of its parent varieties, Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, the grape embodies the distinctive spirit of its homeland. Also known as: Perold’s Hermitage x Pinot.

Pinotage is a blending of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut grapes. It was first bred in 1925 by Abraham Perold, the first professor of Viticulture at Stellenbosch University. He wanted to take advantage of the almost Mediterranean climate and create a unique red wine that was extra juicy.
