However, pallor can portend a serious disease, and when onset is acute, it can herald a true pediatric emergency for which rapid diagnosis and treatment are needed. Any condition that decreases the concentration of hemoglobin or alters the distribution of blood away from the body's surface may present as pallor (table 1).

Compare the colour of the child's palm with your own palm and with the palms of other children. If the skin of the palm is very pale or so pale that it looks white, the child has severe palmar pallor. If possible, measure the haemoglobin or packed cell volume (PCV). Classify the child with severe palmar pallor as SEVERE ANAEMIA.

In most cases, the finding of pallor demands that anemia first be considered as this is the most common cause.
