Philippine National Railways traces its roots to the Ferrocarril de Manila-Dagupan, founded on November 24, 1892 during the Spanish colonial period, and later becoming the Manila Railroad Company (MRR) during the American colonial period.

As the first steel wheels of a locomotive rolled against the Ferrocaril and steam whistled from engine's metal innards, unrest was brewing in colonial Philippines. First, Rizal was deported by the Spanish authorities, and soon after, on July 7, 1892, Andres Bonifacio founded the Katipunan, a revolutionary organization.

On November 24, 1892, the means of travel and communications in Luzon was improved greatly with the inauguration of the 195-kilometer long railway line from Manila to Dagupan in Pangasinan.
