The vast potential of Slum Atlas has already been witnessed by the Urban Community Development (UCD) department of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for the identification of target groups for welfare programs. It was released at the hands of Shri. Prithwiraj Chavan, the then Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

The slums were identified based on high-resolution satellite images such as Resourcesat-2 (LISS-IV) data with the help of visual interpretation and standard image processing techniques, i.e., image rectification, enhancement, and classification.

All departments at PMC are now equipped with centralized GIS system with department wise information on high-resolution satellite imagery (base map). Departments also have facilities to map their ongoing projects on the centralized platform.
