The GE Genesis (officially trademarked GENESIS [5]) is a series of passenger diesel locomotives built by GE Transportation for Amtrak, Metro-North, and Via Rail between 1992 and 2001. A total of 321 units were produced. Designed to meet Amtrak's specifications, the Genesis series is 14 feet 4 inches (4.37 m) tall.

SPECS: These units, designated "Genesis II" were built by General Electric Transportation Systems in Erie, Pennsylvania starting during the mid-1990's through late 2001. Each unit is equipped with a 4250 horsepower prime mover and DC Traction Motors. Among the other amenities are an LCD display in the cab which is set up more like a desk of sorts.

Following the successful introduction of the P40DC, GE unveiled the P42DC - the next production model in the Genesis series in 1996. It carried the same carbody but featured greater horsepower (4200) and improvements to overall electronics and microprocessor controls.

As the new Siemens trainsets continue to be delivered, the GE P42DCs will be progressively retired. The locomotives are approaching their end of life and a rebuild program for the P42DCs was ruled out given GE's decreasing part supply and ability to support Via's fleet.

Only three models of the Genesis series locomotives were built, those being the P40DC, P42DC, and P32AC-DM. Amtrak's Genesis series locomotives were the official replacement for their older EMD F40PHs, which were all eventually retired from service in 2002.
