Oocyte - Wikipedia
An oocyte (/ ˈoʊəsaɪt /, oöcyte, or ovocyte) is a female gametocyte or germ cell involved in reproduction. In other words, it is an immature ovum, or egg cell. An oocyte is produced in a female fetus in the ovary during female gametogenesis. The female germ cells produce a primordial germ cell (PGC), which then undergoes mitosis, forming oogonia.
Unscrambling the oocyte and the egg: clarifying terminology of …
Here we provide functional definitions of the oocyte and egg, and how they can be used in the context of mammalian gamete biology and beyond. Keywords: oocyte, oocyte maturation, egg, gamete / mammalian. The mammalian oocyte is the ‘founder cell’ and refers to a female germ cell arrested in prophase of meiosis I.

Oocyte Development - Embryology
The oocyte (eggs, ova, ovum) is arrested at an early stage of the first { {meiosis)) (first meiotic) division as a primary oocyte (primordial follicle) within the ovary. Following puberty, during each menstrual cycle, pituitary gonadotrophin stimulates completion of …
Oocyte Definition and Examples - Biology Online Dictionary
2022年7月24日 · The oocyte is an immature female sex cell. It starts off as an oogonium by the process of oocytogenesis, and matures to give rise to a fully mature ovum or egg cell and ootid (by ootidogenesis). The counterpart of oocyte in males is spermatocyte.
Mechanisms of Oocyte Maturation and Related Epigenetic …
Oocyte meiotic maturation is a complicated and vital process used to attain full competence required for the oocyte as well as early embryonic development. An oocyte arrested at meiotic prophase I contains a large nucleus covered by a nuclear envelope, which is known as the germinal vesicle (GV).
Oocyte Maturation and Development - PMC
Sexual reproduction is essential for many organisms to propagate themselves. It requires the formation of haploid female and male gametes: oocytes and sperms. These specialized cells are generated through meiosis, a particular type of cell division ...

It is produced in the ovary by an ancestral cell called oogonium and gives rise to the ovule, which can be fertilized. An oocyte is a female germ cell in the process of development. An egg is the egg before it is released at ovulation. An oocyte is the germ cell involved in …
Oocyte - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
The oocyte is the major determinant of embryo developmental competence in women. It delivers half the chromosomal complement to the embryo, but the maternal and paternal genomes are neither symmetrical nor equal in their contributions to embryo fate. Unlike the paternal genome, the maternal genome carries a heavy footprint of parental aging.
