Onitsha (Igbo: Ọ̀nị̀chà Mmílí [7] or simply Ọ̀nị̀chà) is a city on the eastern bank of the Niger River, in Anambra State, Nigeria. Onitsha along with various cities and towns in southern Anambra State, northern Imo State and neighboring Delta State on the western bank of the Niger River, form a continuous metropolitan area. Onitsha is a port and market town in Anambra state in southern Nigeria. The town lies on the east bank of the Niger River. Founded by adventurers from Benin in the early 17th century, the town grew to become the political and trading center of the small Igbo (Ibo) kingdom of Onitsha.
