
NZR WH class - Wikipedia
The NZR W H class was a class of three steam locomotives built by Manning Wardle in 1884 for service on New Zealand's private Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company (WMR). They did not acquire their W H classification until 1908 when WMR was nationalised and incorporated into the New Zealand Government Railways (NZR).

Eventually they were superceded by more powerful locomotives and relegated to shunting and banking duties, and to the haulage of ballast trains. By the turn of the century, two had been sold off and when the Government took over the company, the remaining three were inducted into the NZR system and given the class 'Wh'.

Wikipedia points out the timeliness of the deliveries, noting that the W&M's extension to Johnsonville was ready for construction. Service requirements called for an engine to haul 70 tons up the 1 in 40 (2 1/2%) grade to Johnsonville.
