Dao is the sword of the Naga people and Mizo people of Northeastern India, mainly in the Indian states of Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Assam and Kachin, Sagaing region of Myanmar. The sword, with its wooden hilt, and unique square form is used for digging as well as used in historical warfare.

The general purpose dao of the Naga of northeastern India usually tends to be a broad, moderately thick to thin bladed axe-like implement something like a fascine knife, used not only in war but as the Naga's primary tool.

There are three main types of Naga dao - ancient, axe-headed and choppers. This is a chopper or azhta, attributed to the Sema Naga (now called Sumi) from Nagaland. The Sema only began to manufacture daos in the late 1800s and this example is in relatively good condition.

The dao of the Nagas of north-east India is related, in more than name alone, to the swords of China (dao), Borneo (mandau) and Burma (dha). However, the Naga dao is more diverse than a sword, being an all-purpose tool for agriculture, woodworking, slaughtering, butchery, ceremony and even warfare.

The respective wooden sheath, which is open to one side, is fastened with rattan straps to a wide girdle, which has two parts and is also made of rattan stripes overlaid with fabric (stitched) and dyed black.

A very nice antique Dao sword from the Kachin Naga people, Assam/Burmese Hill regions. Very high qulity piece, the hilt mounted with silver, the grip lacquered with black lac, the pommel mounted with a slab of white precious material with a decorative motif to the centre.
