Mosiah 9:9 We began to till the ground . . . with seeds of corn: Carefully cultured corn growing in the highlands of Guatemala. Corn or maize was a staple in the diet of the Nephites. “Although good soil and growing conditions particularly favored a few areas, most Mesoamerican agriculture was not highly productive.

Mosiah 9 The Record of Zeniff. Mormon inserts this history of the people of Zeniff. It comprises about 70 years and three kings, Zeniff, Noah, and Limhi. It is important to remember that chronologically this is a flashback-to tell us what happened to these people and give background for the state of affairs with Limhi's people.

Mosiah 9:17–19. 17 Yea, in the strength of the Lord did we go forth to battle against the Lamanites; for I and my people did cry mightily to the Lord that he would deliver us out of the hands of our enemies, for we were awakened to a remembrance of the deliverance of our fathers.

Mosiah 9 Alma believes Abinadi and flees into the wilderness. Abinadi is burned to death. Alma teaches and baptizes at the waters of Mormon. The Nephites put King Noah to death. His wicked priests steal daughters of the Lamanites.

Zeniff blames himself for his naive trust in the Lamanite king which has placed his people in danger, but he testifies that they were strengthened by the Lord to defend themselves against Lamanite attacks. It’s important to adjust our mental models as we encounter new information.

The Book of Mosiah (/ m oʊ ˈ s aɪ. ə,-ˈ z aɪ. ə /), [1] translated by Joseph Smith in the early 19th century, is one of the books which make up the Book of Mormon. The title refers to Mosiah II , a king of the Nephites at Zarahemla .
