The majority of Iu Mien was among the Lao communist's enemies due to their involvement with the U.S. CIA operation during the war in Laos. Iu Mien began fleeing the Laos communist regime in mid-1975 into Thailand.

In the early 21st century they numbered some 2,700,000 in China, more than 350,000 in Vietnam, some 40,000 in Thailand, and approximately 20,000 in Laos. Several thousand Mien refugees from Laos have also settled in North America, Australia, and France.

Iu Mien Americans (Meiv guoqc Mienh) are primarily former refugees of the Secret War in Laos and the Vietnam War. While some Iu Mien families were granted political asylum and the opportunity to resettle in the United States prior to 1980, the great majority of Iu Mien immigrants to the U.S. arrived following the Refugee Act of 1980.

The Yao people (simplified Chinese: 瑶族; traditional Chinese: 瑤族; pinyin: Yáozú) or Dao (Vietnamese: người Dao) is a classification for various ethnic minorities in China and Vietnam. Their majority branch is also known as Mien. They originated in the areas around Changsha, which today is the capital of Hunan province in China. [2] .

The Hmong (or Mong) and Iu-Mien (or Mien), two ethnic groups that fled to escape persecution in Laos, have been studied extensively because of the stark adjustments they were forced to make as refugees.

2024年8月27日 · The Iu-Mien, who have been displaced from China, Laos, and Thailand—all within a couple of centuries—remain refugees still in the more foreign land of the United States, but their existence here is unique because unlike in the past, they have migrated for the first time from the mountains to the flatlands.

In Thailand and Laos, the Iu-Mien practiced slash and burn agriculture, also known as shifting cultivation, which involved moving to new land once every decade. In the 1960's and 1970's, Laos got engulfed in the Vietnam War.
