Messier 71 (also known as M71, NGC 6838, or the Angelfish Cluster) is a globular cluster in the small northern constellation Sagitta. It was discovered by Philippe Loys de Chéseaux in 1745 and included by Charles Messier in his catalog of non-comet-like objects in 1780. It was also noted by Koehler at Dresden around 1775. [8]

Messier 71 is a globular star cluster situated in the constellation Sagitta, discovered by the French astronomer Philippe Loys de Chéseaux in 1746 and later independently cataloged by Charles Messier in 1780. Positioned approximately 12,000 light-years away from Earth, this celestial assembly is part of the Milky Way galaxy.

M 71 is a simple Messier object and can be easily found even with small telescopes. Its triangular shape can be seen in middle telescopes and the individual characters or stars are visible in the entire cluster.

2024年9月17日 · Messier 71 is located in a busy star field, similar to M56. It's got a very "loose" nucleus, so much so that it was thought to be an open cluster until the 70s. The characteristic triangular alignment of stars earned the cluster nickname the Scalar or Angelfish Cluster - one of the popular types of fish kept in aquariums.
