To add to the other replies, a mace compared to other weapons is very easy to use and requires very little maintenance. Anyone can pick up a mace and do some pretty serious damage. A sword requires training to use effectively as well as maintenance. So, for clergy who may not have trained extensively for combat, a mace is a very pragmatic choice.
