Lucius Licinius Lucullus (/ lj uː ˈ k ʌ l ə s /; 118 [2] –57/56 BC) was a Roman general and statesman, closely connected with Lucius Cornelius Sulla.

Lucius Licinius Lucullus (born c. 117 bc —died 57/56) was a Roman general who fought Mithradates VI Eupator of Pontus from 74 to 66 bc. He served in the Social War (91–87) under Lucius Cornelius Sulla. As quaestor in 88, he was the only one of Sulla’s officers to take part in his march on Rome.

In his young years Lucullus was a powerful, respected Roman General who finally defeated Mithridates VI (right) in the last of the three Roman wars with Mithridates the Great (in 63 BC). Ancient historians and politicians praised Lucullus and studied him for his clever campaigns.

Ancient biographer Plutarch regarded Lucullus (118-56 BC) as one of the greatest generals and political leaders of the late Republic. He contributed to the rise of the Roman Empire and was a decisive influence on its culture, but today Lucullus is largely unknown and forgotten.

Lucullus (Lucius Licinius Lucullus Ponticus) (lōōkŭl´əs), c.110 BC–56 BC, Roman general. He served in the Social War under Sulla, who made him his favorite. He fought in the East (87 BC–85 BC), always loyal to Sulla, who made him curule aedile (79 BC) and praetor (78 BC).

Lucullus followed his studies and became a competent speaker, in both Greek and Latin, insomuch that Sylla, when composing the commentaries of his own life and actions, dedicated them to him, as one who could have performed the task better himself.
