The Lotus founder had probably underestimated the unique challenges that the high-speed oval provided and it took him three attempts to win with his clearly faster mid-engined machinery. Jim Clark piloted the Ford engined Lotus 38 to victory in 1965. With new Formula 1 regulations to deal with Lotus did not build a new Indy racer until 1968.

The Lotus 64 project was funded by Ford who supplied a V8 turbo engine, and by STP. The 4 wheel drive was retained, thus the biggest difference was the new engine; a 2.65-liter turbocharged Ford engine, making more than 700 horsepower.

The first of four Lotus Type 64s built, this chassis was finally freed from its hiding place in recent years. Now part of the formidable Lotus collection of the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, it was subjected to a thorough restoration by Clive Chapman's Classic Team Lotus.
