Lotte Laserstein was a German-born Swedish painter best known for her realistic portraits of women in urban settings. Laserstein’s paintings combine the psychological qualities of New Objectivity painters like Christian Schad with the precise naturalism, contour lines, and smooth paint application of the 16th-century painter Hans Holbein .

Lotte Laserstein (28 November 1898 – 21 January 1993) was a German-Swedish painter. [1] She was an artist of figurative paintings in Germany's Weimar Republic. The National Socialist regime and its anti-Semitism forced her to leave Germany in 1937 and to emigrate to Sweden. [2]

Laserstein became an accomplished realist painter, winning the Academy’s gold medal for her work. She soon had her own pupils, and her first solo exhibition at a Berlin gallery in 1930 garnered critical praise. To supplement her income, Laserstein took various jobs making decorative art and, most significantly, illustrating an anatomy text.

Lotte Laserstein (1898–1993) is one of the art world’s most exciting recent rediscoveries. Exhibitions of her work in Germany have attracted broad audiences eager to explore this long-forgotten artist and have established a place for her in the history of twentieth-century art.

Laserstein succeeded in something that was anything but self-evident for a female artist in the 1920s and 1930s: as of 1921, she attended the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts – which had only begun admitting women in 1919 – and then secured her financial independence by founding her own painting school.
