Lao Ai (Chinese: 嫪毐; pinyin: Lào Ǎi; died 238 BCE) was an imposter eunuch and official of the State of Qin during the late Warring States period. [1] [2] Allegedly falsifying his castration in order to gain entry into the court of Qin, he became the favorite of Queen Dowager Zhao, the mother of Qin Shi Huang, later the First Emperor of China.

嫪毐[lào ǎi]（？―前238年），一说为“摎毐”，出生于邯郸（今河北省邯郸市），战国末期秦国的长信侯，秦始皇母亲赵太后男宠。嫪毐早年因其“大阴人”异能及吕不韦政治需要，被吕不韦收为门下舍人，随后伪装成宦官身份被推荐入宫，与秦始皇的母亲赵太后私通。

In 235 BCE, after being implicated in a scandal involving the Queen Dowager Zhao (Ying Zheng's mother) and her illicit lover Lao Ai, Lü Buwei was stripped of his posts and titles and was banished to the remote Shu region in the south of Qin. While in exile, Lü Buwei committed suicide by consuming poison.

At the heart of it was his mother, Queen Zhao, and her ambitious lover, Lao Ai. China's young emperor, Qin Shi Huang, faced a serious threat to his reign in 238 BC.
