The concept for the K3 2-6-0 began in August 1917 when Gresley started to consider a new express goods engine for the Great Northern Railway (GNR) based on his K2 2-6-0 (GNR Class H3), but with a higher boiler pressure of 180psi and 20in or 20.5in diameter cylinders with a 28in stroke.

The 85 2-6-0s inherited by the LNER were therefore all from the GNR, where Gresley followed his two-cylinder design of 1912 with Britain’s first three-cylinder Moguls in 1920, the K3. Both classes survived intact into BR days. Another 189 three-cylinder 2-6-0s were added by the LNER, all but the final six being K3s.

A larger diameter boiler was designed in July 1913 for fitting to further 2-6-0s. These were fitted to the next batch of 2-6-0s which were ordered in August 1913 to become GNR Class H3 (LNER Class K2). The firebox was 6in longer although the throatplate sloped backwards resulting in the same length at the base.

The frame was 5in longer than the K3 frame, and a similar pony truck was used although the K4 pony truck had a 6ft 7in radius swing compared to the K3's 5ft 11.5in radius swing. Authority for the new engine had not been included in the 1936 Build Programme, so a pending order for twenty-one K3s was reduced to twenty.

2007年4月29日 · Further to my last post the K3 is now painted black and numbered 114. I'm now just finishing playing around with the chassis to achieve smooth runing with the front pony truck. I'll post some more pics if anyone is interested. Finally I won a broken V2 on the above mentioned auction site it had a spilt drive gear.
