I have been to famous spots like Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera, Kyoto station, Nishiki market, horseracing etc. So I’m looking for hidden gems in Kyoto. Preferably related to Japanese culture (I mean not like shopping centres). Events will also be good, but I searched in calendars and there’s no event in Kyoto. Thank you so much!

For Kyoto itself, I think 5 days is a reasonable amount of time, but if you're using it as a base for Kansai I would recommend at least a couple more for at least day trips to Nara, Osaka, and Himeji (possibly with Kobe). We are at A Happy Pancake Kyoto and had the BEST soufflé pancakes for breakfast we have ever had. Waited 45 mins and don’t regret a second of it!! There are also fantastic cocktails at Scotch and Branch. We had great Mitarashi dango near the train station at Arashiyama, but it was a long wait and very crowded.

The buses to and from the further flung temples can all be gotten at Kyoto station. Many travelers arrive in Kyoto by train and depart by train and use Kyoto as a base for day trips to Nara and Osaka. Staying near Kyoto Station does seem to make the most sense to me.

2023年4月7日 · I would suggest the Cross Hotel Kyoto (different location than the Sakura Cross Hotel suggested in another comment.) It was super close to Pontocho Alley and Kiyamachi-dori. We easily walked to Gion several times. The Sanyo train station is a 5 minute walk, and it was fairly easy getting to/from Kyoto station.

2023年5月17日 · Uji is marginally cheaper but pretty much all the well-known brands will have a branch in Kyoto as well. If you’re just looking for some souvenir matcha for baking or lattes rather than whisking up yourself a cup, you won’t need to go out of your way for the ceremonial matcha.
