Kobzar (literally the ‘kobza player’ or ‘minstrel’). Originally the title of the first collection of poems by Taras Shevchenko, consisting of eight poems, mainly Romantic ballads, published by P. Martos in Saint Petersburg in 1840 (the most recent offset facsimile in 1976).

Wandering folk bards who performed a large repertoire of epic-historical, religious, and folk songs while playing a kobza or bandura. Kobzars first emerged in Kyivan Rus’ and were popular by the 15th century. Some (eg, Churylo and Tarashko) performed at Polish royal courts.

Taras Shevchenko’s Kobzar is perhaps the greatest—or at least best-known—work of Ukrainian literature from the classic period of romantic, independent, native Ukrainian writing. Yet despite that, it has been—in full, and not as a poem or two selected into some anthology of Slavic literatures—an elusive work to locate in translation.

He began to write poetry, and in 1840 published Kobzar, his first book of verse. The title refers to the ancient Ukrainian poets who traveled the countryside singing epic poems, often playing a stringed instrument, the kobza.

Shevchenko’s Kobzar, as his collected poetry is now known, is dotted with archaisms here and there, but remains just as vibrant a work now as when it first appeared in 1840. The style is virtually as accessible to Ukrainian readers and the message of Shevchenko’s poetry just as important as it was when it was written.
