The Kalinago, also called Island Caribs [5] or simply Caribs, are an Indigenous people of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. They may have been related to the Mainland Caribs (Kalina) of South America, but they spoke an unrelated language known as Kalinago or Island Carib.

The Kalinago Territory, previously known as the Carib Reserve or Carib Territory (outdated/derogatory), [2][3][4][5] is a 3,700-acre (15 km 2) district in the Caribbean island country of Dominica. It was established for the Indigenous Kalinago people who inhabited the region prior to European colonization and settlement.

The term “Kalinago” is used by anthropologists and archaeologists to denote the most recent group of people living in the Lesser Antilles at the time of the European invasion (colloquially known as “Caribs” or, less ambiguously “Island-Caribs”).

2022年1月17日 · Warfare was the Kalinago’s major interest. Internal conflicts were common; there was no important chief, military organization, or hierarchical structure. The men strove to be individualistic warriors and boasted of their heroic exploits. The Kalinagos produced several crops. Cassava or manioc was their main crop just like the Tainos.

2022年8月5日 · Although the majority of Dominicans live on or near the coast, the country has a strong connection to its mountains and forests, which are particularly significant for the island’s Kalinago population, the only Caribbean community directly descended from the indigenous people that populated the entire region before colonization.
