En el aspecto jugable, KOF 2002 apuesta por la vuelta al sistema tradicional de combates, es decir 3 contra 3, dejando atrás los experimentos de Strikers o los equipos de libre formación que pudimos ver en KOF 2001. Ésta es una de las novedades jugables más fácilmente perceptibles para el jugador, pero hay otras, de mucha mayor importancia.
