Kharaharapriya is a rāga in Carnatic music. It is the 22nd melakarta rāga (parent scale) in the 72 melakarta rāga system. It is possible that the name of the ragam was originally Harapriya but it was changed to conform to the Katapayadi formula. Kharaharapriya has a distinct melody and brings out the Karuna rasam, invoking pathos in the listeners.

Kafi (IAST: Kāfi) is a raga in Hindustani classical music. It corresponds to Kharaharapriya in Carnatic music and Dorian mode in Western music. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande classified most ragas into ten Thaats. Kafi Thaat is one of them. The raga Kafi is the principal raga of its Thaat.

There is no exact count/known number of ragas which are there in Indian classical music. Once Ustad Vilayat Khan saheb at the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Festival, Pune said before beginning his performance – "There are approximately four lakh raags in Hindustani Classical music. Many of them are repetitious but have different names."

In this post, we will try to understand Melakartha ragas in more detail. Melakartha ragas are better known as the 'Janaka' ragas meaning 'parent' ragas i.e. the ragas from which other ragas are born or derived.
