The U.S. Army has selected these two explosives as common low-cost replacements for legacy explosives TNT and Composition-B used in indirect fire weapons such as artillery and mortar munition systems.

IMX-104 is a modern explosive compound recognized for its high performance and safety features. Composed of an insensitive high explosive (IHE) called FOX-7, IMX-104 represents a significant advancement in explosive technology. Its formulation incorporates FOX-7 with other ingredients to enhance stability and usability.

IMX-104 shows improved shock and IM response as compared with the traditional explosive fills. The new composition, IMX-104, is currently being evaluated for the M821A2, M889A2, & m889A1 81mm Mortars, the M720A1, M768, and M888 60mm Mortars, the M934A1 120mm Mortar, the M2A4 15 lb Shaped Charge, and the Bangalore Torpedo.

We report detonation size-effect data for IMX-104, a new insensitive ex-plosive formulation composed of RDX, NTO, and DNAN. The size-effect data in-cludes numerically predicted and experimentally measured diameter-effect curves from cylindrical-geometry rate sticks and thickness-effect curves from slab tests.
