What were the real competitors to the early IBM PC?
2018年7月11日 · While the IBM PC marketing was a major feat pulled out by IBM+Microsoft, the IBM PC hardware together with the DOS OS was a throwback at least 1 decade in the past for 8-bits hardware, CP/M compatibility, and terrible sound and graphics capability that still haunts us …
ibm pc - Origin of CHS geometry limits in BIOS calls
2024年10月21日 · The first hard drives appeared later on IBM 5160 PC/XT and the first drives were 10MB, with parameters of 306 cylinders, 4 heads, and 17 sectors per track. The XT hard drive adapter had a separate hard disk BIOS which hooked the INT 13H to provide hard disk as drive 80h and as a fallback for other drives called the motherboard BIOS for handling ...
Why does PC video memory base address change depending on …
2024年2月7日 · Video in the IBM PC is based on video cards bringing their own memory. While it is mapped into CPU address space, Video access can only happen from the card itself. Thus avoid CPU side collisions (bus war) when operating more than one card, they had to use different address regions. Was it Intended to Have More Than One Parallel? Sure.
How much did IBM save by limiting the PC to 4.77 MHz?
2020年3月11日 · IBM, big gorilla of the computer biz, comes out with a processor seemingly an order of magnitude faster than those clunky 1.02-1.79 MHz 6502 systems. Yeah, hold on. It has an 8-bit bus, and memory operations happened at 1/4 this frequency, at 1.19 MHz -- crystal / 12. The IBM PC had the memory throughput of an Atari 2600. That's not so awesome.
ibm pc - Twist in floppy disk cable - hack or intended design ...
2020年12月5日 · You can see the manual for Shugart's longer-predating-the-IBM-PC original 1976 single-sided SA400 drive which originated this interface (as an evolution of the earlier 8-inch drive's interface) here. When Shugart extended the scheme to double sided drives such as the SA450 (still before the IBM-PC), they put four more places on the far end of ...
ibm pc - How is it possible to connect more than two floppy drives …
2018年1月21日 · Hardware-wise the PC floppy controller also supports this. But as the original housing only allowed two (full height) drives, the controller thus split the interface onto two (proprietary) connectors: one PCB header for up to two internal drives, and a DB37 for two external drives (separate housing).
ibm pc - Are there any good, non-abandoned PC emulators ...
2021年8月20日 · It performs full emulation of IBM PC/XT (8088) hardware that implements the chipset/ISA using the actual BIOS images of the PC, video cards and hard drive controllers. It is an actively maintained project - at the time of this writing, the latest snapshot was this morning.
ibm pc - How can I connect a DIN plug keyboard to USB?
2016年7月20日 · Although the pinouts are not too bad. The IBM DIN and PS/2 sockets have pins as below: 1: Clock 2: Data 3: Reserved (in practice, usually a reset line) 4: Ground 5: +5V . I would suggest: Use a USB-RS232 adaptor and wire the DIN plug to a DB25 or DB9 RS232. The keyboard will then appear to the PC as being on a standard COM port.
ibm pc - How to use ISA card in modern PC - Retrocomputing …
The problem with a lot of relatively recent (in the last 10 years or so) PC motherboards with ISA support don't support ISA DMA, since it can't be implemented using a PCI to ISA bridge without additional connections that PC chipsets don't support anymore. ISA DMA can be supported with LPC to ISA bridges though.
ibm pc - Why do PCs boot in 720x400 resolution?
2021年5月20日 · However, the original IBM PC had a beautiful 720x350 monochrome 80x25 text mode using a 9x14 font. So it didn't need much memory and it pushed the limits of "ordinary" monitors, but on a real IBM monochrome monitor (or equivalent) it was fantastic. The pixels weren't square, but that really doesn't matter for a text-only display.
