Hurao is one of the most celebrated Chamorro/CHamoru chiefs in Guam’s history. He was a Hagåtña Chamorri (high caste) in the late 1600’s, who with the backing of the village makanas (spiritual leaders), was key in instigating the Spanish-CHamoru War.

Chief Hurao, Inc. (dba Chief Hurao Academy), Guåhan's first CHamoru immersion school, is a non-profit organization that was created in an effort to address the need for a stable CHamoru language program on Guam.

2025年3月19日 · The Spanish accused those allied with Hurao of killing a young Mexican servant to the Jesuits outside Hagåtña. A group of soldiers attempted to take some CHamorus as prisoner for the crime.

2022年10月11日 · Mom's book included the first English translation of a speech given by Chief Hurao in 1670, a famous Chamorro leader. Other scholars have published subsequent translations, but not a lot of people have seen the first one. Here it is: It would have been better had these Europeans remained in their own country.

Established in 2005, Chief Hurao Academy is the first “full-immersion” CHamoru language program on Guam. Continuing our mission will lead to an increase in fluency and usage of the CHamoru language. Our hope is that one day, our children and our people will know, practice and embrace what it means to “be CHamoru” in today’s world.

2014年1月26日 · Maga’Låhi Ågualin also rose to defend his homeland during the slaughter of the CHamorus by the Spaniards. He and his people fought to rid themselves of the foreigners that hindered their freedom. Maga’Låhi Ågualin is noted to have united his people between 1676 and 1677 by infusing in them a sense of nationalism.

Chief Hurao survived the first two battles of 1671, the first as a prisoner of the Spanish, the second as the leader of a thirteen day siege.
